Introduction to my Wine Journey

Hello fellow wine enthusiasts (beginner or not) to my first blog post!

My past experience with wine has not always been a loving one. The wines I’ve had in the past always seemed too dry or acidic for me to enjoy the taste of. There seemed to be too many brands and options for wine which made it difficult to commit my time and money into the art of enjoying wine. I turned to drinking beer, which was much easier to get started on. There were very well-known brands that most people stick to, but avenues for new tastes that could be explored. In the past year, I have been more enticed to explore the world of wine and expand my palate.

I have typically enjoyed white wine more than red because they are usually more sweet than dry. There are exceptions to that though, for example I don’t like Champagne because it is too dry. I wanted to venture into wine more this past year and figured I would try some rose. Being a college student, and wanting the best bang for my buck, I went out and got a box of Franzia “Sunset Blush.” Other Franzia flavors were not good at all, but the Sunset Blush I could tolerate, and honestly wasn’t that bad at all. Because I was initially turned off from wine, I don’t have a lot of experience tasting it and am trying to get as much of that in now as I can.

The main thing I want out of this class is the ability to drink a wine and appreciate each distinct flavor without only tasting “red wine” or “white wine.” To be able to find out what taste I like in wine and be able to pair that with food. And then from that, have the ability to talk about those qualities with other people. That's all I have for today’s blog, so thanks for reading!

Cheers,

Zach Niles
